This Gustavian style stool dates from 1880 and comes in the form of a rectangular seating piece with a padded top in need of upholstery. The structure comprises painted wood in a cream colour, enhanced with parcel gilt details and carved floral rosettes on the corners of the seat rail. Further decoration includes fluted turned legs connected by a central H-stretcher, showing age wear across the finish and a stripe pattern on the fabric. It measures 47 cm high, 53 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this item works well placed at the foot of the bed or as an accent seat in a bedroom, dressing room or living space. The piece functions effectively as a decorative stool, offering a period aesthetic drawn from Swedish design traditions while providing a compact seating option.

Gustavian style emerged in Sweden during the late 18th century under King Gustav III, inspired by French Neoclassical design principles. It is characterised by painted light finishes, delicate fluted legs, symmetrical lines, and carved classical motifs such as rosettes and laurel leaves.

Traditional Gustavian seating was crafted predominantly from native softwoods like pine or hardwoods like birch, finished with pale chalk paint, milk paint, or soft grey and cream glazes. Frame joinery relies on pegged mortise and tenon joints, often incorporating carved rosettes and parcel-gilt detailing alongside drop-in or webbed upholstered seats.

Authentic Gustavian pieces exhibit natural signs of age, such as authentic paint distressing, layered undercoats, oxidised wood, and hand-carved decorative elements. Construction details like hand-planed timber, square-headed iron fasteners, and hand-cut joinery distinguish original 18th and 19th-century examples from later reproductions.

A Gustavian stool functions well as an accent piece at the foot of a bed, beneath a console table, or as additional seating in a living space. The muted paint tones and neutral upholstery blend seamlessly with minimalist, modern rustic, or classical Scandinavian interior palettes.

Maintain painted surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers or excess water that could lift paint layers. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and intense sunlight to preserve the wooden frame and fabric upholstery from drying out or fading.
