Victorian Silver Mounted Spirit Hip Flask Glasgow 1873

19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A Victorian silver mounted oval spirit or hip flask with clear hallmarks on both the side and the screw top for Glasgow 1873, Queen Victoria head, and makers mark for initials JM - there are several makers registered in Glasgow Assay Office with these initials around 1873, John Miller and John Muirhead being two possibles.

The smooth silver base or cup is gilt lined and fits perfectly. The top half of the flask is covered in brown striped leather with cut outs for checking the level of liquid (presumably they were always half full!). The secrew top and lid are silver, hallmarked. The screw top works perfectly. There is some very minor shrinkage in the leather just under the screw top.

Lovely quality with weight and substance, very tactile and still useful.

Some shading on the silver is due to photography shadow - the silver is smooth and clear.

Date of Manufacture

Aramis Antiques has dated this Victorian Silver Hip Flask to the 1870s.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1870s:
Glasgow date letter F on the cup and cover: 1873.
Queen Victoria duty mark on the silver: production during her reign.
Matching maker mark JM on cup and cover: original components made together.
Gilt wash lining the detachable drinking cup: prevents spirits tainting the silver.
Drying and shrinkage in the ribbed leather shoulder: age in antique hide.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian spirit hip flask dates from 1870 and displays sterling silver, glass, and dark brown leather construction with silver and dark brown colouration. The oval object possesses a polished silver lower cup and cap, a banded silver screw top, and striped dark brown leather covering the upper half of the glass body, which includes a vertical sight line window. Clear hallmarks appear on both the side and the screw top for Glasgow 1873, alongside a Queen Victoria head and makers mark initials JM, while minor shrinkage shows in the leather just under the screw top. The piece measures 14.5 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. Practical placement includes a sideboard top in a gentleman's library setting. The object serves as a functional container for holding spirits during outdoor pursuits or social occasions, while remaining small enough for pocket storage or tabletop display.

Victorian hip flasks were designed as portable personal spirit containers for outdoor pursuits such as hunting, travelling, and sporting events. They frequently featured glass bodies encased in leather with removable sterling silver drinking cups.

Traditional Victorian spirit flasks combine hand-blown glass containers with bound leather upper sections and sterling silver or electroplated lower cups and caps, engineered to prevent metal contact from altering the flavour of the liquor.

Look for clear hallmark stamps indicating the silver purity, makers mark, town mark, and date letter on the removable cup and silver collar, along with period details like bayonet caps and vertical liquid sight-lines in the leather.

Display the flask on a bar cart, atop an office desk, or inside a glazed display cabinet alongside period barware and glass decanters to add texture and historical context.

Clean the silver elements gently with a specialised silver polishing cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners that could saturate and ruin the adjacent leather or interior cork seals.
