Antique Silver Hip Flask

1900 - 1920
Description

A good example of an antique silver hip flask. The main glass bottle has a removable silver base with gilt lining which can double as a drinking cup. The collar and top are also silver and the cap twists to lock in place. It is a good quality piece with ornately embossed top and the top and cup are both engraved with the initial C.

It is hallmarked for London, 1907 and the maker William Amaziah Ellwick.

It is in good condition for its age and displays well. There are no damages to the glass. There is a small dent to the bottom corner of the silver cup (see photo) and a few small dinks and dents around the top but overall it displays well. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

This Victorian antique hip flask combines clear fluted glass with sterling silver elements, including a collar, a bayonet cap, and a removable base cup with a gilt lining. The silver cap has chased foliage decoration and an engraved monogram, while the silver base cup features a small dent to the bottom corner alongside a few small dinks around the top, paired with an engraved initial C and British hallmarks. The body measures 14 cm high, 7.5 cm wide, and 3.5 cm deep. Displaying this piece upon a sideboard top within a gentleman's library setting provides a practical way to hold spirits for social occasions or quiet evenings. The polished silver finish and transparent faceted glass catch the light, adding historical character to a traditional home bar setup.

Pocket-sized liquid containers evolved in the 18th and 19th centuries, predominantly used by gentry during field sports and outdoor travel. By the Victorian era, silversmiths combined cut glass bodies with sterling silver mounts and removable drinking cups to create practical portable barware.

These flasks were typically made from thick cut or moulded glass to withstand impact, fitted with a hallmarked silver collar and cap. The lower half often featured a friction-fitted sterling silver cup sleeve, lined inside with silver-gilt to prevent corrosion from spirits.

Authentic pieces feature official assay office hallmarks stamped on both the silver collar and the removable cup base. Look for traditional bayonet-twist or screw caps, hand-engraved monograms, and period-correct glass cutting patterns.

Display the flask on a wooden bar tray alongside vintage glassware, or place it on a sideboard or bookshelf in a study setting. Combining metallic silver accents with dark timber surfaces highlights the contrast of materials.

Rinse the interior glass chamber with warm water and mild detergent without submerging the silver components completely. Clean the sterling silver exterior using a silver polishing cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners that can wear away hand-chased details or hallmarks.
