A mote spoon is a specialised implement used during the eighteenth century to skim tea leaves from the surface of brewed tea and to clear tea leaves that became lodged in the spout of a teapot.

These items were traditionally crafted from sterling silver using hand-beaten and pierced manufacturing techniques, featuring a bowl perforated with intricate cut-out designs and a tapered, spike-like terminal.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining the presence of period-appropriate hallmarks stamped on the shank, hand-cut piercing work in the bowl, and the characteristic tapered point used for clearing teapot spouts.

This small collectible can be displayed within a glass-fronted cabinet, mounted in a specialised shadow box frame, or styled atop a sideboard as part of a curated display of antique silver.

Antique silver should be cleaned infrequently using a non-abrasive, high-quality silver polish and a soft cloth, avoiding harsh dips that can strip the desirable natural oxidation from recessed areas.
