FAQs

Bedside cabinets evolved during the 19th century from simple night tables into enclosed cupboards designed to discreetly house chamber pots and personal items before plumbing became standard in bedrooms.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods like mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, panelled doors, and turned wooden knobs reflecting high-quality cabinet making.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional secondary woods, natural ageing of the timber, and sometimes maker stamps or paper labels inside the door or drawer.

A dark wood antique cabinet adds warmth and character when paired with neutral walls, serving as a functional bedside surface or an eclectic end table in a modern living space.

Maintain the wood by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and periodically applying beeswax to nourish and protect the polished finish.
