This antique Tekke Turkmen rug is a wool floor covering made in the Turkmen tribal style around 1880. The textile displays a deep red field decorated with three rows of seven rounded Tekke gul motifs, alongside geometric borders and serrated leaf skirts in shades of black, cream, and red. The piece measures 142 cm high by 108 cm wide and 1 cm deep, forming a small format reminiscent of a main carpet. The hand-knotted textile presents an even medium pile with signs of consistent age and wear, while the edges show traditional flat-woven fringe details. The clean condition allows immediate placement as a decorative accent in a gentleman's library or study, where the rich colour palette complements traditional interiors.

Tekke Turkmen rugs originated from nomadic weavers in Central Asia and are distinguished by repeating octagonal medallions called guls. These geometric patterns are arranged in structured rows across a deep red or mahogany field, bordered by intricate geometric bands and flat-woven ends.

These rugs are woven using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp/weft foundations. The rich red, navy, and cream shades are produced using natural plant and insect dyes, such as madder root for the characteristic deep reds.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature fine knotting, soft wool pile, and subtle variations in natural dye tones, known as abrash. They display specific Tekke gul variations with quartered interiors containing minor motifs, alongside wide decorative skirts, or alem, at the ends.

The deep red palette and precise geometric composition provide visual grounding in traditional settings like libraries or dining rooms, while also offering warm contrast against neutral, minimalist modern decor.

Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotating brush to prevent pile damage. Place a high-quality rug pad underneath to reduce wear, rotate the rug periodically to ensure even exposure to light and traffic, and arrange professional cleaning when required.
