Description

A fine small mid 19th Century silver plated meat dome / dish cover. Made by respected makers Elkington and Co. Bearing a fantastic crowned crest to each side, possibly for a military regiment, and the initial 'W' in script. With a good tight removable handle.

The condition is overall very good but with signs of use. A clean interior but with some marking. A few dings / ripples to the body on one side and some light scratching, but very little to no plate wear.

Overall a beautiful historical piece of metalware, that has probably seen a small about of 'action'.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Meat domes, also known as plate covers, became prominent in formal dining during the 19th century to keep roasted joints warm between the kitchen and the dining table.

These items were typically constructed from a base metal such as copper or nickel silver, onto which a layer of silver was applied, often using the revolutionary electroplating process pioneered by makers like Elkington.

Authentic pieces bear period manufacturer marks, often include makers stamps such as Elkington hallmarks, and exhibit natural signs of age like wear to the underlying base metal.

These pieces can be displayed on a sideboard or used as a reflective centrepiece to add a layer of historic metallic texture to a dining space.

Silver plate should be cleaned using a specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to avoid damaging the thin metallic coating, and stored in a dry environment.
