This Georgian sterling silver sugar basket dates from the reign of George III and originates from London in 1812, bearing the maker's mark of Alice and George Burrows II. Modelled in a navette shape with a polished silver finish, the piece rests on an oval pedestal foot and includes a hinged swing handle. The body features bright-cut engraved decoration depicting scrolls and foliage, alongside two shield-shaped cartouches where one displays italicised initials while the other remains blank. The handle is somewhat loose although it stands upright, and the pedestal base wobbles slightly. Measuring 16 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 11 cm deep, this solid silver item works well in a traditional dining room or living space. It is commonly placed on a sideboard top to serve as a decorative accessory, a functional sugar basin, or a display piece for a collection of antique silverware.

Sugar baskets were specialised tableware items introduced in the late eighteenth century, designed to hold loaf sugar or sweetmeats on dining tables during the Georgian period.

These pieces were crafted from sterling silver, featuring hand-engraved bright-cut decoration, reeded edges, and a hinged swing handle mounted on a pedestal base.

Authentic pieces carry British hallmarks stamped by an assay office, including the makers mark, sterling lion passant, town mark, date letter, and the sovereign duty mark.

A silver basket can serve as a decorative vessel on a sideboard, a display piece within a glazed cabinet, or a trinket holder on a dressing table.

Clean gently with a soft microfibre cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive substances or prolonged exposure to high humidity.
