This Victorian decorative bowl is hand-blown from pink opaque glass and dates to 1860. The fluted, opalescent glass bowl displays a crimped rim and a gold frill around the centre, resting within a silver-plated circular wire frame. The stand is raised on three ball feet and incorporates a polished pontil mark on the underside. Measuring 19 cm high, 20 cm wide and 15 cm deep, the piece combines pink and silver tones in its overall design. Today, the dish works well placed on a sideboard top in a dining room or living area. It functions practically to hold chocolates, preserves, or pot-pourri, adding a touch of period style to the interior.

Popular during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, a bonbon dish was designed to present small sweets, candied fruits, or dainties at formal gatherings. These pieces frequently featured decorative hand-blown art glass mounted inside custom-fitted silver-plated or sterling silver frames.

These decorative objects typically combine opalescent, cranberry, or casing art glass with a silver-plated or electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) metal frame. The glass was often mouth-blown and shaped by hand with manipulated crimped or ruffled edges.

Authentic pieces generally show evidence of period glassworking techniques, such as hand-crimped rims, opalescence caused by heat-reactive mineral additives, and rough or ground pontil marks on the base. Metal stands often bear makers marks or silver-plate hallmarks consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturers.

Small decorative art glass dishes serve as refined accents on sideboards, console tables, or vanity tops. They can function as catch-all trays for jewellery or keys, or remain unadorned to showcase the play of light through coloured glass.

Wash the glass bowl gently by hand in lukewarm water using a mild washing-up liquid, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or thermal shock. Clean the metal frame separately using a soft, non-abrasive cloth and specialist silver polish to prevent tarnishing while preserving the metal plating.
