This early Victorian decanter label is a sterling silver piece made in Birmingham in 1859 by Aston & Son. The object takes a rounded rectangular form with a reflective silver colour finish and clear reeded border mouldings. The front surface contains engraved lettering spelling gin in pricked capitals, while the reverse holds clear and readable hallmarks. A link suspension chain attaches at the top corners through two small metal loops. The physical item measures 2.5 cm high by 4 cm wide. Placed on a sideboard top, the label hangs around the neck of a decanter to identify its contents in a gentleman's library or dining room setting today.

Originating in the eighteenth century, decanter labelsalso known as bottle ticketswere crafted to identify spirits and wines stored in clear, unlabelled glass decanters.

Victorian decanter labels were predominantly struck from sterling silver or silver plate, featuring hand-engraved lettering and suspended from fine silver chains.

Authentic British silver labels feature official hallmarking, including the makers mark, purity mark, town mark, and date letter, typically stamped on the reverse side or border.

Drape the silver label around glass decanters on a drinks trolley or sideboard top to introduce historical detail to a contemporary bar arrangement.

Polish gently using a soft cotton cloth and specialist silver polish, avoiding harsh abrasive chemicals, and store in anti-tarnish tissue paper when not in use.
