This Georgian decanter label originates from the 18th century, produced in silver with a bright metallic finish and a clear silver colour. The octagonal plaque carries engraved lettering spelling HOLLANDS across the front, framed by a reeded border with squared corners, while a belcher chain attaches to the top loops for suspension. The reverse bears clear, readable hallmarks with an absent town mark, identifying the makers as Phipps & Robinson from London in 1797. Measuring 2.2 cm high and 4.3 cm wide, the piece serves as a functional drinks tag. In a contemporary home, this item rests upon a sideboard top, suspended around the neck of a decanter to identify its contents during dining or entertaining. Collectors of Georgian silverware use such articles to complete period barware sets, while enthusiasts of historical spirits employ them on traditional bottles of gin.

Decanter labels, originally known as bottle tickets, emerged in Great Britain during the 1730s. They were created to identify spirits, wines, and liquors contained within opaque glass decanters or uniform table bottles.

While enamel, mother-of-pearl, and base metals were occasionally used, sterling silver was the predominant material. Silversmiths used hand-punching, casting, and engraving techniques to create the lettering and decorative borders.

Authentic 18th-century silver labels typically display hallmark stamps, such as the makers mark, sterling lion passant, town mark, and sovereign duty mark. Inspecting the hand-engraved lettering and natural wear around the chain loops also assists in verifying age.

An antique decanter label is best displayed draped over a crystal spirit decanter arranged on a modern brass or dark wood drinks trolley, sideboard, or bar cabinet.

Clean gently using a soft cotton cloth and a specialist silver polishing cream. Avoid immersing delicate chain links in liquid dips, and store the piece in a dry, tarnish-resistant felt pouch when not on display.
