Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This Chinese export decanter label dates from the late nineteenth century and takes the form of a silver crescent banner suspended from a link chain. The front of the crescent bears the hand-engraved word PORT beneath a detailed chased dragon with scaly texture, claws, open jaws, and crest. Two Chinese character marks appear on the reverse. The piece exhibits a bright metallic silver finish with light surface scratches reflecting its age. Additional observable details include the articulated links of the suspension chain, the curved ends pierced for attachment, and the incised lettering style. Measuring 6 cm in width by 5 cm in height and weighing 8 g, this small bottle tag is designed for hanging around the neck of a decanter. The piece suits display on a sideboard top in a dining room, bar area, or gentleman's library. It functions practically to identify port bottles during formal dining or casual entertaining while serving as a decorative collectible.

FAQs

Chinese export silver decanter labels emerged during the nineteenth century to cater to European and Western markets. Crafted by artisan silversmiths in port cities such as Canton and Shanghai, these pieces combined traditional Chinese motifs, such as dragons and bamboo, with Western dining customs like labelling wine and spirit decanters.

Decanter labels were traditionally crafted from solid silver using hand-chasing, repousse, and piercing techniques to create intricate relief designs. A fine silver chain was soldered to mounting loops on the plaque to allow the ticket to hang neatly around the neck of a glass decanter.

Authentic Chinese export silver often features workshop mark stamps or Chinese character ideograms alongside Western-style pseudo-hallmarks. The chasing work displays distinctive depth and crisp hand-tooling rather than uniform machine stamping, alongside a soft grey tarnish characteristic of aged silver alloy.

In corporate or residential interiors, silver bottle tickets are best displayed draped around cut-crystal or vibrant glass decanters on a bar cart, tray, or sideboard. Combining silver accessories with glassware adds metallic lustre and historical detail to modern home bar displays.

Clean silver decanter labels using a dry, soft cotton or microfibre polishing cloth specifically designed for fine metals. Avoid harsh chemical liquid dips or abrasive creams, which can strip protective patination from intricate chased crevices and weaken small chain links.
