Kashmiri lacquerware and papier-mache decorative arts developed over centuries in Northern India, gaining significant commercial popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Craftspeople adapted traditional decorative motifs onto functional western lighting forms, such as turned table lamp bases, primarily for export and the colonial market.

These lamp bases were typically constructed from turned hardwood or dense papier-mache formed over a wooden core. The surface was smoothed with gesso, hand-painted using natural vegetable or mineral pigments, and sealed with multiple layers of protective clear lacquer.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-painted detail with slight natural variations, intricate botanical patterns such as chinar leaves or floral arabesques, and fine lacquer craquelure consistent with age. Earlier examples often feature turned openwork or twisted stem detailing and original brass light fitments.

A hand-painted Kashmiri lamp serves as an ideal accent piece on a sideboard, bedside table, or desk. Pair it with a plain silk or linen shade to balance the detailed pattern, allowing the intricate polychrome stem to act as a focal point against neutral walls.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and damp environments to prevent fading or lifting of the lacquer layer. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or abrasive polishes that could damage the delicate painted surface.
