FAQs

Kashmiri lacquered crafts originated in the Kashmir region of northern India, renowned for intricate hand-painted floral motifs on turned wood and papier-mache. During the late 19th century, these items became popular export items for Western interiors during the British colonial period.

Traditional Kashmiri lamp bases were manufactured using carved wood or dense papier-mache, coated with layers of organic lacquer to create a durable, smooth surface for fine hand-painted decoration.

Authentic pieces from the late 19th century typically feature dense floral brushwork in natural pigments, subtle age-related crazing in the lacquer surface, and historical brass or metal fitments.

A painted Kashmiri lamp functions as a focal accent piece when placed on modern timber sideboards, side tables, or writing desks, bringing historical texture into neutral modern schemes.

Lacquered wooden surfaces should be lightly dusted with a dry, soft microfibre cloth without water, solvents, or abrasive chemical cleaners, and kept out of direct sunlight to prevent lacquer breakdown.
