This early 19th-century Grand Regency secretaire bookcase uses rich mahogany timber finished with a warm brown colour and a mellow patina. The top of the piece holds a swan-neck pediment over glazed upper doors fitted with delicate astragal glazing bars and working keys. Below the upper display area sits a lower section containing a fall-front secretaire drawer with glass ink wells, three graduated drawers with brass lion-mask ring handles, and bracket feet supporting the frame. The overall dimensions measure 225 cm high by 109 cm wide by 57 cm deep. In a modern home, this practical furniture piece works well in a study, library, or living room to provide combined display shelves, concealed storage space, and a dedicated writing surface. The interior configuration houses pigeonholes and drawers alongside the leather-lined writing surface behind the fall-front drawer, while the adjustable shelves behind the glazed doors accommodate a large collection of books or decorative objects.

A secretaire bookcase is a dual-purpose piece of cabinet furniture originating in the eighteenth century that combines an upper glazed bookcase with a lower chest containing a pull-out or drop-front writing desk.

These cabinets were typically constructed using timbers such as mahogany or oak, featuring hand-drawn glass panels, astragal glazing bars, and cast brass hardware such as lion mask handles or ring pulls.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original brass locks, subtle irregularities in hand-blown glass, and hand-sawn secondary timbers on the cabinet backs.

A secretaire bookcase serves as a functional focal point in a home office, library, or living space, providing modern storage and a compact desk surface while displaying books or decorative objects behind glass.

Mahogany should be kept away from direct heat sources and intense sunlight to avoid timber movement and bleaching. Dust surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax annually to preserve the finish.
