This George III mahogany secretaire bookcase stands 218 cm high, 102 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. The Georgian design incorporates an upper glazed cabinet with thirteen-panel geometric astragal bars, a dentil cornice across the top, and bracket feet at the base. The lower section contains a drop-front writing drawer over three graduated lower drawers, fitted with round brass drop handles and brass key escutcheons. The polished mahogany exhibits a warm brown colour with varied natural grain patterns across the timber surfaces. Glazed doors enclose shelves within the upper cabinet. Original brass hardware is present inside and out. In a contemporary home, this piece suits a study, library, or living room for document storage, book display, and writing tasks. The drop-front drawer provides a dedicated writing surface, while the adjustable interior shelves accommodate various book sizes or decorative objects. The upper cabinet protects contents behind glass panels while maintaining visibility. The deep mahogany tone coordinates with traditional wood furnishings and neutral interior palettes.

FAQs

A George III secretaire bookcase is a combination furniture piece crafted during the reign of King George III (17601820), featuring a upper glazed display cabinet over a lower chest that conceals a fitted drop-down writing desk.

These pieces were primarily constructed from solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, incorporating hand-cut glass panes for glazing, brass hardware for drawer pulls and escutcheons, and pine or oak as secondary drawer lining woods.

Authentic Georgian pieces feature hand-dovetailed drawer joints, irregularities in hand-blown glass panes, original brass fittings with natural oxidisation, and hand-planed timber surfaces on the reverse and undersides.

A mahogany secretaire functions effectively as a home office workstation in a living room, study, or hallway, paired with neutral walls and contemporary art to balance the deep timber tones.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a beeswax polish annually, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
