This Georgian secretaire bookcase from circa 1800 combines a display cabinet and a desk in one traditional mahogany furniture piece rendered in a warm brown colour. The upper section contains astragal glazed doors enclosing shelves, set above a pull-out secretaire drawer fitted with oval brass drop handles and backplates. Below the writing section, two panelled cupboard doors open to storage space, and the whole cabinet stands upon bracket feet with moulded cornices framing the top. The timber shows rich grain patterns throughout the polished surfaces. Measuring 203 cm high, 104 cm wide and 53 cm deep, the standing unit fits naturally into a gentleman's library, a home study, or a traditional living room for daily writing work and book storage.

A Georgian secretaire bookcase combines an upper glazed display or bookcase section with a lower chest or cabinet featuring a fitted pull-out writing drawer. Emerging in the eighteenth century, these pieces provided multi-functional utility for private libraries and reception rooms.

Solid and veneered mahogany was the predominant timber used for exterior surfaces due to its dense grain and durability. Secondary timbers, such as pine or oak, were used for drawer linings, combined with hand-cut dovetail joinery and brass hardware.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-sawn timber marks, irregular hand-blown glass panes within the glazed doors, and hand-cut dovetail joints. Original drawer bottoms often consist of thick timber panels fixed with early steel screws or nails.

Position the piece in a study, dining room, or living space as a focal point, using the glazed upper cabinet for display and the drop-down or pull-out secretaire drawer as a compact writing space.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the wood grain once or twice annually. Position the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and finish degradation.
