Fine Georgian Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase, circa 1830
A superb early 19th century Georgian mahogany secretaire bookcase of excellent quality and proportion, dating to circa 1830 and retaining a rich, well-figured mahogany colour throughout.
The upper section features a pair of elegant Gothic arched astragal glazed doors, opening to reveal a shelved interior ideal for the display of books, porcelain, or decorative objects. The glazing bars are finely proportioned and characteristic of the late Georgian period, lending the piece a refined architectural presence.
Below, the secretaire drawer opens to reveal a beautifully fitted satinwood interior, comprising a central cupboard flanked by an arrangement of small drawers and pigeonholes, with a pull-out writing surface. This section demonstrates skilled English cabinetmaking, combining functionality with restrained elegance.
The lower section is fitted with three full-width drawers, each with brass handles, offering generous st
...orage and excellent balance to the overall form. The bookcase stands on shaped bracket feet and is finished with a gently moulded cornice and turned finials above.
Presented in very good condition throughout, with a pleasing patina consistent with age and careful use. A fine example of Georgian furniture that works equally well in a traditional library, study, or a more contemporary interior seeking character and depth.
