This Victorian table lamp is a gilded brass lighting piece dating from around 1890. The construction employs heavy cast metal with an original gold finish and a silk-covered flex cable. Ornate decorative elements include a square pierced base with fretted flower and leaf carving, a fluted column shaft, flared acanthus leaf scrollwork, and three decorative side arms. The overall dimensions measure 49.5 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 23 cm deep. Practical placement includes a sideboard top in a living room, hallway, or study, providing functional illumination while adding period character to traditional interior schemes. The cleaned wiring incorporates a new lamp holder and fitted plug for immediate domestic use.

FAQs

Victorian lighting design emerged during the nineteenth century, characterised by intricate cast metalwork, classical motifs, fluted columns, and ornamental scrollwork. Advances in metal casting allowed for detailed decorative brassware that reflected the prevailing eclectic tastes of the period.

These lamps were predominantly manufactured using cast brass, bronze, or gilt metal alloys. Many pieces featured gilded finishes, known as ormolu, applied over detailed cast work to simulate solid gold and protect the underlying metal from oxidisation.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy cast metal construction with distinct hand-finished details, seam lines from casting moulds, and natural wear to the gilded surfaces. Many examples were originally designed for oil or gas and show evidence of historical electrical conversion at the socket fittings.

Place the lamp on a dark wood sideboard, side table, or writing desk to create a warm focal point. Pairing ornate metal bases with neutral or structured fabric shades helps balance historical detail within contemporary living spaces.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove loose particles. Avoid abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners, as these can strip away delicate surface gilding and historical patina over time.
