Glc Brass Table or Wall Lamp of Hexagonal Baluster Form

1900 - 1920
Description

An early 20th-century brass lamp of hexagonal baluster form, standing on a tripod base and manufactured by the General Lighting Company (GLC) — stamped to the underside. Often mistaken for Faraday & Son examples, this is a distinct and well-made alternative with comparable quality.

One leg retains a hanging eye, allowing the lamp to be wall-mounted if desired. The geometry of the form gives it a strong architectural feel, making it equally suited to desks, side tables, or wall placement.

Recently rewired and PAT tested.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A baluster form lamp features a central stem shaped like a baluster, a moulded vase-like column historically favoured in classical architecture and decorative metalwork. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these lamps draw upon traditional turnery techniques and classical proportions.

Historical brass lamps were constructed primarily from cast or spun brass, an alloy of copper and zinc known for its durability and warm metallic lustre. Internal components often featured iron reinforcement rods, while fittings incorporated ceramic or early bakelite bayonet mounts.

Authentic period brass lighting typically displays natural surface patination, subtle casting irregularities, and original joining threads or screw fittings. Look for maker stamps, casting marks, or historical mounting holes along the base that indicate original function.

A solid brass lamp provides textural warmth when placed atop a timber sideboard, bedside cabinet, or writing desk. Contrast its classical silhouette against contemporary minimalist backdrops or integrate it into a layered, traditional interior scheme.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth to prevent dirt accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, as these remove natural patination; apply a light coat of microcrystalline wax if gentle preservation is required.
