This Victorian sterling silver string box is a desk accessory from the gentleman's library, hallmarked in London in 1890 with the maker's mark for William Comyns. The piece possesses a polished silver finish with repousse fluting, beaded borders, a domed lid with a small top hole, and three ornate scrolled feet with ball and claw details. Measuring 11.2 cm tall, this item weighs 147 grams and is free from dings, splits, holes, and repairs with a clean interior. Designed to hold a ball of string that could be drawn through the top hole for tying parcels, this item fits well on an office desk today. The body and lid display vertical fluted patterns and raised beaded lines. The small domed lid sits securely over the bowl-shaped body, which rests upon the three protruding cast feet.

An antique silver string box is a decorative desktop vessel designed during the 19th and early 20th centuries to house a ball of twine or string, allowing the thread to pass through an aperture for package wrapping and letter sealing.

Victorian string boxes were predominantly crafted from hallmarked sterling silver or silver plate, featuring techniques such as repousse embossing, hand-chasing, fluting, and cast decorative feet.

Authentic items feature British hallmark stampings including a lion passant, city mark, date letter, and makers initials, alongside Period-correct hand-chased ornamentation and structural wear.

An antique silver string box functions well as a decorative accent on a contemporary home office desk, a library writing table, or styled alongside books on a console table.

Maintain sterling silver by dusting regularly with a microfiber cloth and occasionally applying a gentle, non-abrasive silver polish to clear tarnish without wearing down surface chasing.
