19th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

An elegant 19th-century overshot glass Champagne Jug dating to c1880.

It has a generous bulbous body with a flared crimped pouring lip and an applied wrythen handle. An applied rigaree encircles the integral internal ice well, allowing ice to chill the contents without diluting them as it melted. The heavily textured overshot surface gives the jug a wonderfully tactile appearance while beautifully diffusing the light.

Made originally for serving Champagne, it is equally suitable today for water, wine or fruit juices.

Date & Origin

England, USA, or Bohemia, c1880. Period of Queen Victoria.

Condition

Excellent. No chips, cracks or restoration. Clean and clear internally.

Dimensions

Height: 26.8cm

Diameter: 13m

Comments

Overshot, or Ice Glass as it was commonly known during the Victorian period, was produced in England, Europe and America.

The distinctive finish was created by rolling the gather of hot glass in tiny fragments of crushed glass before reheating. This fused the particles into the surface while removing their sharp edges, producing the characteristic sparkling, frosted appearance and tactile texture that made overshot glass so distinctive.

Champagne jugs incorporating an internal ice chamber represented the height of Victorian tableware design. The central chamber was filled with ice, chilling the wine while preventing dilution, making them both practical serving vessels and impressive centrepieces for the dining table.

Declaration

This Victorian overshot glass champagne jug dates to the 19th century, representing the period of Queen Victoria. It is a clear glass serving vessel featuring a generous bulbous body, a flared crimped pouring lip, and an applied wrythen handle. An applied rigaree encircles the integral internal ice well, allowing ice to chill contents without dilution. The heavily textured overshot surface gives the piece a tactile appearance while diffusing light, created by rolling hot glass in crushed fragments. Measuring 26.8 cm in height and 13 cm in diameter, this pitcher maintains a clean and clear interior with no chips, cracks, or restoration. Made originally for serving champagne, the jug functions equally well today for water, wine, or fruit juices in a domestic setting. It suits placement upon a dining table as a centrepiece or on a sideboard top in an English country house interior. The internal ice chamber design exemplifies Victorian tableware engineering, combining practical function with decorative appeal through its sparkling, frosted exterior and applied ribbed clear handle.

Overshot glass is a technique popularized in the late 19th century where a gather of molten glass is rolled over crushed glass particles before being reheated and hand-blown, creating a textured, ice-like surface.

These vessels were hand-blown using clear lead glass, integrating a separate internal glass compartment fused near the handle opening to contain crushed ice, keeping liquids cold without dilution.

Authentic pieces feature crisp, uneven external glass texture from melted fragments, hand-applied handles with visible tooling marks, and polished or snapped pontil marks on the underside of the base.

An antique ice jug functions as a functional decanter on a drinks trolley, a decorative focal point on a sideboard, or an unconventional vase for floral displays.

Wash by hand using lukewarm water and mild liquid detergent with a soft brush, avoiding rapid temperature changes that could stress the internal chamber wall or crack the applied handle.
