Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. FAQs

Painted wedding cupboards, or marriage chests, originated in rural European regions including the Alps and provincial France during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Commissioned as dowry pieces or wedding gifts, these softwood cabinets were decorated with hand-painted motifs symbolising fertility, prosperity, and family lineage.

Craftsmen typically constructed folk art furniture from locally sourced softwoods such as pine, spruce, or fir. The decorative surface was achieved using milk paints or natural earth pigments bound with egg tempera or oil, applied over hand-planed timber.

Authentic period pieces exhibit uneven paint wear in high-touch areas, natural timber shrinkage across joinery gaps, and oxidation on exposed wood. Hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, wooden peg fixings, and original hand-painted pigment layerings further indicate age.

A polychrome folk art cupboard creates a focal point when placed against neutral or lime-washed walls in modern minimalist interiors. Combining the textural painted finish with streamlined contemporary lighting or modern ceramics balances historical character with modern design.

Maintain painted pine cupboards by dusting regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth without applying liquid polish or chemical sprays. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high-humidity areas to prevent pigment fading and wood movement.
