Pair Georgian Jelly Glasses C1820

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A fine pair of early 19th century jelly glasses dating to c1820.

They have flared round funnel bowls with broad flute cutting to the lower section, set on short baluster knop stems and conical feet with polished pontils.

Jelly glasses were used for serving individual portions of sweet jelly, one of the most fashionable desserts of the Georgian and Regency periods. Made from wine, fruit juices, sugar and natural gelatine, jellies were considered both a luxury food and, in certain forms, a restorative for invalids.

The mixture was poured into the glass and allowed to set before being served at the dessert course, where jelly glasses formed part of the increasingly elaborate array of specialist tablewares found on the Georgian dining table.

This pair of Georgian dessert glasses dates to c1820 during the period of King George IV. Formed from clear lead crystal, each vessel has a flared round funnel bowl with broad flute cutting and a panel-cut lower section, set upon a short baluster knop stem and a plain circular conical foot. The base displays a polished pontil mark from manufacture. Jelly glasses were originally used in English homes to serve individual portions of sweet jellies during the dessert course on the dining table. Today, these items suit display on a sideboard top or within a cabinet collection. The matching pair stands with a height of 11.4cm, a rim diameter of 6.1cm, and a foot diameter of 5.7cm. They remain in excellent condition with clear internal glass and no chips, cracks or restoration.

Georgian jelly glasses are small, thick-walled glass vessels designed during the 18th and early 19th centuries to serve set jellies, custards, and syllabubs at formal dining occasions.

These pieces were traditionally hand-blown using lead crystal glass, characterised by cut panels or fluting and heavy conical or knopped stems on circular footed bases.

Authentic pieces often display hand-cut fluting, a rough or smoothed pontil scar beneath the base, minor striations or small air bubbles within the glass, and slight wear along the foot rim.

These small decorative vessels can be displayed on a dining sideboard, arranged inside a glass cabinet, or repurposed as small candle holders on a formal dining table.

Hand wash gently in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding extreme temperature shifts and dishwasher use to prevent clouding or thermal shock.
