Rare 19th Century Small Ruby Cased Dram Tumbler C1840

19th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A very unusual mid 19th century ruby cased glass dram tumbler, probably English and dating to c1840.

It has a distinctive small tumbler form with a flared rim, the bowl tapering sharply towards the base before bugling outward again to form a clear integral base, without a separate stem or foot.

The rich ruby red glass is cased in clear, becoming brilliantly translucent around the thin rim, while the substantial integral base is predominantly clear glass, providing a striking contrast with the ruby bowl.

At only 7.2cm tall, its diminutive size and capacity are consistent with a small drinking glass intended for whisky, gin or another spirit. Although the outline has some similarities to contemporary jelly glasses, the pronounced internal thickening towards the base of the bowl would make it impractical for eating jelly with a spoon, as the jelly would be stuck under the thicked section.

The glass displays good genuine wear to the clear base together with hand tooling and irregularities within the glass metal. The character of the glass, with the small imperfections associated with less controlled melting and refining, is consistent with early to mid 19th century manufacture, prior to the widespread introduction of more efficient regenerative gas-fired furnaces during the second half of the century.

Historical Context

Cased coloured glass was being produced in Britain by this period, with examples recorded in the Richardson and Stevens & Williams pattern books from as early as 1829. Richardson's of Stourbridge were also experimenting extensively with coloured glass during the 1830s and 1840s, including ruby and cased ruby glass, demonstrating that this type of construction was well established in English glassmaking by the period of this tumbler.

Date & Origin

England, c1840. Period of Victoria.

This Victorian glass dram tumbler dates to the mid 19th century around 1840. The piece is formed from lead glass in a rich ruby red colour with a cased clear layer, featuring a flared rim, a waisted profile tapering sharply toward the bottom, and a heavy, thick integral base. Visible details include hand tooling, glass irregularities, and age-related wear to the underside of the base. Measuring 7.2 cm tall, the glass has a rim diameter of 5.3 cm, a foot diameter of 4.3 cm, and a weight of 72 grams. In a modern interior, this small drinking glass serves as a traditional display piece on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or study. The compact vessel is suitable for holding small items or simply standing as an antique cabinet specimen showcasing early cased glass manufacturing techniques.

A dram tumbler is a small glass vessel historically designed for serving modest portions of spirits such as whisky or brandy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Antique ruby glass was typically produced by adding gold chloride or copper compounds to molten lead glass, creating a rich crimson colour through precise temperature control and casing techniques.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces often display hand-blown characteristics, slight pontil marks or polished bases, subtle variations in glass thickness, and natural friction wear on the base.

These compact vessels can be displayed on a brass tray inside a drinks cabinet, arranged on a styled bookshelf alongside bound volumes, or used as accent pieces on a sideboard.

Wash the glass by hand using tepid water and mild liquid detergent, avoiding dishwasher use or extreme temperature changes that could cause thermal shock and cracking.
