This nineteenth-century French clear glass marriage goblet dates to the period around 1850 and is formed in a French Chateau style. The clear glass vessel stands 15.625 cm high and comprises a flared bowl decorated with wheel-engraved foliage, a dated crest from 1847, love birds, and a dog representing faithfulness. Below the engraved decoration, the lower portion of the bowl features vertical facets that transition down to a knoped stem and a faceted octagonal cut foot. A small white rectangular label is affixed to the edge of the octagonal base, and the entire piece displays clean transparent glass surfaces. Positioned atop a sideboard, this display goblet serves as a decorative tabletop accessory in a living room, dining room, or hallway setting. It provides a focal point for historic glassware collections or surface styling displays.

Marriage goblets emerged in continental Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries as ceremonial gift vessels presented to couples on their wedding day. They were traditionally decorated with customized wheel-engraved inscriptions, monograms, dates, and symbolic motifs such as lovebirds, hearts, or faithful dogs to commemorate the union.

These goblets were typically free-blown or mold-blown from clear soda-lime or lead glass. Craftspeople shaped the stems and cut faceted bases by hand using grinding wheels, followed by intricate copper-wheel engraving to create matte decorative patterns on the glass surface.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, including subtle hand-blowing irregularities, a snapped or ground pontil mark under the base, and minor surface wear consistent with age around the rim and foot. Engravings from this era show slight hand-drawn variations rather than the uniform lines produced by modern laser techniques.

An engraved glass chalice works well as a focal accent on a dining room sideboard, inside a glazed display cabinet, or styled alongside modern ceramics on an open shelf. Grouping clear period glass with contrasting textures, such as dark wood or natural stone, highlights the transparency and detailed surface work of the piece.

Clean historic glassware gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild liquid detergent, avoiding dishwasher use entirely. Dry immediately with a lint-free soft cloth to prevent water spots, and protect the glass from extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent thermal shock and cracking.
