Antique 20th Century Carved Oak Blanket Box | Linenfold Panels

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Vintage 20th century blanket box in solid oak, a handsome and well-built piece in the traditional Gothic revival manner, showcasing fine craftsmanship and the timeless appeal of English country oak.

The front is carved with three linenfold panels set within a framed and moulded surround, and the hinged lid lifts to reveal a generous, plain storage well, ideal for blankets, linen, throws or children's toys.

It is of sturdy panelled construction throughout, with fielded panels to both sides and a two-panel back, so it looks just as good from every angle. The thick moulded lid sits above a stepped plinth base raised on chunky square block feet.

The oak displays a lovely figured grain with attractive medullary rays, and has a warm, rich dark colour with a pleasing patina built up over the years.

Presented in good, sound condition with some minor signs of age and use consistent with its age. A very desirable and practical piece, perfect for the foot of a bed, a hallway or a living room, where it can double as a window seat or coffee table.

This twentieth-century blanket box follows the Tudor Revival style and uses solid oak with a dark brown finish. The rectangular frame holds three carved linenfold panels on the front, set beneath a thick moulded edge and sitting above chunky square block feet. The solid timber shows a visible figured grain and medullary rays across the paneled surfaces. The box measures 46.5 cm high, 94 cm wide, and 37.5 cm deep. Suitable for placement at the foot of a bed, in a hallway, or in a living room, this coffer provides generous interior storage for blankets, linen, throws, or children's toys. The flat top surface allows the piece to double as a window seat or a coffee table while maintaining a traditional English country house appearance.

Linenfold carving is a relief technique originating in the 15th century, designed to emulate the folds of draped linen or parchment. Coffers decorated with these carved panels became popular storage chests throughout Tudor, Jacobean, and revival periods.

Traditional coffers and blanket boxes are constructed from solid oak using mortise and tenon joinery, often secured with wooden pegs. The frame-and-panel construction allows the timber to expand and contract naturally without splitting.

Authentic pieces feature relief-carved details within framed panels, traditional frame-and-panel joinery, and natural surface wear consistent with age. Inspecting the interior for hand-planed timber surfaces and period-appropriate ironwork hinges helps confirm age.

A carved oak coffer provides functional storage at the foot of a bed, along an entryway wall, or serves as a low coffee table in a living space. Pairing dark oak furniture with neutral textiles and simple, contemporary lighting creates a balanced scheme.

Dust the surfaces regularly using a dry, soft cloth along the direction of the wood grain. Preserve the finish by applying a coat of quality beeswax polish once or twice per year, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
