Historical Context
During the late Georgian and Regency periods, coloured drinking glasses became an increasingly fashionable feature of the dining table. Glassmakers produced a wide variety of rich colours, including emerald green, amethyst, cobalt blue and the distinctive blue-green shades often described today as teal or turquoise.
These colours were achieved through the introduction of metallic compounds into the glass mixture, with iron and copper compounds particularly associated with green and turquoise-blue shades.
