This large 20th-century open bookcase dates from 1920 in the traditional style. Made from solid oak, the timber displays a medium brown warm golden colour with a figured grain and a mellow patina. The double-width form features a moulded cornice at the top, a central vertical divider separating two bays, lipped oak shelf fronts, and a deep plinth base. Ten open shelves provide space for books, records, and display items. The piece measures 191 cm high, 186.5 cm wide, and 32 cm deep. It functions as a practical storage and display unit suited for a study, home library, living room, or office, fitting comfortably into both traditional and modern interior settings.

FAQs

Twentieth-century open oak bookcases are defined by their functional design, sturdy frame construction, and straight-sided shelving, often designed to accommodate expanding private or professional libraries without decorative doors.

These units were typically crafted using solid oak or heavy oak veneers, featuring vertical central partitions for structural stability and thick horizontal shelves to support substantial literary weight.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of traditional joinery, natural timber grain variation, authentic wear along the shelf edges, and historical patina within the wood finish.

A double-width open bookcase can be styled by balancing books both vertically and horizontally, interspersed with minimalist ceramic vessels, framed prints, or sculptural objects to break up solid rows.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to heat sources to prevent timber movement.
