A set of six Victorian red over crystal glass finger bowls dating from around 1870 brings traditional English craftsmanship to the dining table. Each bowl displays a vibrant red overlay on clear lead crystal, shaped with a rounded rim and a deep circular body. The decoration includes a detailed cut starburst pattern on the base that reflects light across the surface, complemented by fine parallel fluting radiating upward from the center. Measuring 6.25 cm high and 11.25 cm wide, these items are designed for use as finger bowls during formal dining or evening gatherings. In a modern home, they sit well arranged on a sideboard top or displayed within a glass-fronted cabinet when not in use.

Finger bowls were introduced to formal dining services to allow guests to rinse their fingertips between courses, particularly after consuming fruit or seafood. Popularised during the Victorian era, these bowls were crafted from decorative glass and placed alongside fruit plates or dessert settings.

Victorian red overlay glass, often referred to as ruby or flashed glass, was created by fusing a thin layer of molten red glass onto a clear lead crystal base. Glassmakers then cut or etched through the outer coloured layer to reveal the clear crystal beneath, creating contrasting decorative patterns.

Authentic Victorian ruby glass bowls usually exhibit hand-cut details, such as starburst or rayed motifs on the base, rather than molded seams. They often feature slight variations in thickness, hand-polished rims, and subtle wear marks consistent with age on the underside.

These antique glassware pieces can be repurposed as elegant decorative accents on sideboards, used as tealight holders to emit warm coloured light, or arranged together as a striking table centrepiece for formal occasions.

Hand wash antique glass in warm water using a mild liquid soap and a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive pads. Never place antique crystal overlay glass in a dishwasher, as extreme temperature changes and harsh detergents can damage or cloud the glass.
