A hand-painted Indian papier-mache cylindrical container serves as a table lamp base, dating to the period around 1920 in an Indian folk art style. The dark ground features hand-painted gold animal motifs depicting tigers hunting deer, complemented by decorative foliate borders in red, green, and gold. The cylindrical body includes a brass socket and a fitted lid, showing visible scuffs, losses, and surface abrasions from age and use. The base including the light fitting stands at 38.5 cm high and 17.5 cm in diameter. This piece functions as a table lamp placed on a sideboard top in a home today, bringing a distinct focal point to living spaces or bedrooms.

Papier-mache craftsmanship in India, particularly in regions such as Kashmir and Rajasthan, dates back centuries and was influenced by Persian artisans who introduced lacquered paper techniques for decorative vessels, boxes, and domestic items.

These containers were created by layering pulped paper mixed with adhesives over wooden or clay moulds, followed by drying, applying a coat of plaster or smooth lacquer, and decorating the exterior with hand-painted mineral pigments.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural aging such as delicate surface crazing, slight unevenness from hand-moulding, light edge wear to the painted surface, and soft patina on the lacquered finish.

A converted vessel lamp serves as an accent lighting piece on a console table or desk, ideally fitted with a neutral linen or silk shade to highlight the detailed hand-painted body.

Maintain the surface by dusting lightly with a dry, soft cloth, keeping the item away from direct moisture, high humidity, and harsh chemical polish that could dissolve the protective lacquer.
