Gentle wear to polish on the projecting plinth: honest handling over generations.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This quality antique Victorian mahogany bookcase, dating from 1860, is an imposing piece of library furniture rendered in a warm brown timber finish. The upper section comprises a moulded cornice above a pair of arched glazed doors with shaped mouldings, flanked by turned columns, opening to reveal adjustable shelves within. Below sits a base featuring a curved, serpentine-shaped top and one long drawer, alongside two figured mahogany shaped panelled doors also flanked by turned columns, opening to a fitted interior and retaining the original key. The whole stands on a sturdy plinth base. Measuring 220.5 cm high, 113.5 cm wide, and 55.5 cm deep, this substantial architectural cabinet is designed for use in a traditional gentleman's library or study to display and store books and collections. In a home today, this Victorian bookcase brings traditional character and practical storage to a study, home office, or formal living room. The rich grain of the mahogany timber and the symmetry of the turned columns create a strong visual presence suited to both period and classic interior schemes. The upper glass-fronted shelves offer display space for valued volumes, whilst the enclosed lower cupboards provide concealed storage for paperwork or household items. The original key, glazed arched openings, and figured panelled lower doors complete the piece, making it a functional workspace or library centrepiece.

FAQs

Victorian mahogany glazed bookcases typically feature architectural details such as arched glass doors, moulded cornices, and turned pilasters resting on a solid cupboard base.

These pieces were primarily constructed using solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers over pine or oak carcases, fitted with hand-blown glass panels and brass hardware.

Authentic Victorian bookcases feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original cylinder or wavy glass panes, hand-planed backboards, and authentic age-related wear around the locks and shelf runs.

Place the bookcase in a study, dining room, or hallway, filling the shelves with curated books, ceramics, or decorative objects to create a focal point that bridges classic and contemporary aesthetics.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources, clean the glass with a dry microfibre cloth, and nourish the wood twice yearly with a high-quality beeswax polish.
