This Victorian bookcase stands in warm brown mahogany with a rich tone, excellent grain, and a stepped profile on the moulded cornice. The upper section comprises twin arched glazed doors enclosing three adjustable shelves, while the lower section includes two drawers fitted with original stamped brass handles above a double-door cupboard with panelled doors and rounded corners. Light surface wear includes age-related marks and minor scratches throughout. The piece measures 224 cm high, 114.5 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, with a surface height of 94.5 cm. In a contemporary home, this traditional library piece serves as a practical storage solution in a living room, study, or hallway. The upper glazed cabinet provides dust-free display space for books and decorative objects, and the lower enclosed cupboard and drawers offer concealed storage for everyday items. The substantial height and narrow footprint make it suitable for positioning against a living room wall or within a home office study setup.

A Victorian glazed mahogany bookcase typically features a two-part construction, combining a glass-fronted upper cabinet for display with a solid lower storage base. Manufactured during the nineteenth century, these pieces feature rich mahogany timber, moulded cornices, and arched or rectangular glazing bars.

Craftsmen utilised flame mahogany veneers over solid pine or oak frames, with hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers and brass hardware. The upper sections incorporated float glass, held in place by wooden glazing beads or putty.

Authentic pieces show evidence of hand-tooling, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and minor irregularities in the original cylinder or crown glass panes. Secondary woods like pine or oak are commonly present inside drawer linings and back panels.

Place the unit against a neutral wall to highlight the warm wood tones, and fill the shelves with a mixture of books, contemporary ceramics, and glassware. Placing low-heat internal lighting inside can also highlight displayed items.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish annually to protect the wood finish. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping and veneer lifting.
