This German Baroque drinkware piece takes the form of a roemer, originating around 1780. Formed from dark amber glass, the vessel has a smooth ovoid bowl mounted on a short stem adorned with applied prunts and a band of vertical ridges. Below this, the stem transitions into a wide, heavily ribbed coiled glass foot that tapers outwards toward the flat base. Reflections play across the lustrous amber surface, highlighting the various molded textures and glass thicknesses throughout the piece. The roemer stands 13.25 cm high. Today, this antique vessel suits placement upon a gentleman's library desk, a living room sideboard top, or a display cabinet. It functions as a striking decorative display object or a cabinet piece for collectors of historic glassware. Placing the roemer in a well-lit area allows natural light to filter through the rich amber glass, illuminating its detailed mouldings and distinctive foot.

FAQs

A roemer, or rummer, is a traditional European wine vessel characterised by a hollow stem, a rounded bowl, and a trailed or coiled thread foot, historically produced in Germany and the Netherlands.

These vessels were hand-blown from potash-lime or forest glass, featuring applied glass prunts on the stem for grip and a foot formed by winding continuous glass threads around a conical core.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-blown characteristics including raw pontil scars, seed bubbles within the glass batch, and variations in the applied glass threading and prunts.

Place the vessel on a sideboard top or illuminated shelf where light can pass through the amber glass to highlight its texture and form.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild liquid detergent, avoiding abrasive cloths, extreme temperature shifts, or mechanical dishwashers.
