An antique Victorian metamorphic gout stool brings traditional utility and period character to a gentleman's library or study setting. The design incorporates a dark brown stained beech wood frame with a fully adjustable base operated by a notched ratchet mechanism, supported upon turned toupee feet. The sloping top cushion is upholstered in green velvet with a patterned gimp braid trim along the lower border, finished with a padded bolster headrest at the upper end. Metal hinges and small screws secure the adjustable components beneath the upholstery. Position this piece beside a fireplace hearth or an armchair for comfortable leg elevation while reading or relaxing. The measurements are 56 cm long, 39 cm wide, and a maximum height of 47 cm when fully adjusted.

FAQs

A metamorphic gout stool is a 19th-century adjustable footrest designed with a notched ratchet mechanism that allows the user to elevate their legs at varying angles for medical comfort.

These pieces are usually built from turned hardwoods such as beech, walnut, or mahogany, utilizing mechanical notched ratchets and padded upholstery finished with trim or studs.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut ratchet notches, original wood or metal adjustment pegs, 19th-century joinery techniques, and natural wear along the moving friction points.

Place the stool near a fireplace, armchair, or reading nook to function as an intriguing accent piece that combines historical character with ergonomic footrest utility.

Maintain the timber frame with occasional wax polishing, ensure the ratchet mechanism remains clean and free of debris, and gently vacuum the fabric upholstery using a brush attachment.
