Pair of Edwardian Silver Desk Candlesticks

1900 - 1920
Description

A good example of a pair of antique Sterling Silver candlesticks. They are a short squat design and were likely made to be used on a desk. They are stylish pieces with a band of greek key decoration around the base and the top. They are good quality with weighted bases and both are hallmarked for Chester, 1908, S.Blanckensee & Son Ltd.

They are in good condition for their age. There are some minor dinks around the top and some light surface marks, knocks and signs of age and use but overall they display well. They have been gently cleaned and polished and are ready for use.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Edwardian sterling silver desk candlesticks exhibits a short squat form finished in a polished silver tone. Each piece incorporates a weighted circular base and a flared sconce, both accented with engraved Greek key border patterns. Visible details include minor dinks around the top, along with light surface marks, knocks, and other signs of age and use across the metal surfaces. Hallmarks stamped into the silver identify them as originating from Chester in 1908 by the maker S.Blanckensee & Son Ltd. The candlesticks measure 7 cm high and 9 cm wide. Suitable for a gentleman's library or office desk, these items provide traditional illumination and period character when placed upon a study table, writing desk, or mantelpiece.

FAQs

Edwardian silver desk candlesticks typically feature low-profile heights suited for writing tables, often combining Neoclassical motifs like Greek key borders with refined, balanced proportions popular during the early 20th century.

These pieces were crafted from sterling silver sheet and cast elements, frequently featuring weighted bases filled with resin or pitch to provide lower centres of gravity on writing surfaces.

Authentic British silver items display official assay office hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling purity, a date letter indicating 1901 to 1910, and a registered makers mark stamped onto the base or sconce.

Position them as a pair on an executive desk, a mantelpiece, or a dark wood sideboard to introduce classic metallic highlights and geometric detailing.

Polish gently using a soft lint-free cloth and specialised silver foam or cream, avoiding immersion in water which can compromise weighted internal components.
