This late 19th-century English country bookcase combines a glazed display cabinet with a lower storage cupboard. Constructed from painted pine, the piece has an off-white exterior finish and a pale grey interior, fitted with glass panes in the upper doors and iron hardware. The top section incorporates a moulded cornice above two glazed doors with adjustable interior shelving, while the base section features a double-panelled cupboard with vertical wooden mouldings. Measuring 213.5 cm high, 128 cm wide and 52 cm deep, the unit provides substantial storage capacity for a living room, study or dining room. The glazed upper section allows for the display of books, decorative objects or tableware, and the lower panelled doors conceal everyday items out of sight.

Nineteenth-century painted glazed bookcases typically feature a two-part construction with upper glass doors for displaying literature or decorative items and a lower timber cupboard for concealed storage. Often crafted from pine or hardwood, these pieces were frequently painted to protect the timber or fit lighter interior colour palettes.

These cabinets were traditionally constructed using solid timber joinery, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, mortise and tenon framing, and field-panelled doors. The upper sections utilised hand-blown or cylinder glass panes secured within timber frames, coated with layered milk-based or oil paints.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age, including subtle irregularities in the glass, period iron or brass hardware, and hand-planed backboards. Examining the paint layers often reveals historical re-painting, natural wear around handles and timber joints, and original wood visible beneath.

Position the cabinet against a main wall to anchor a dining room, kitchen, or living area. Balance the interior shelves with a curated mix of bound books, ceramics, and glassware, utilizing the contrasting interior paint to draw focus to displayed objects.

Clean the painted exterior gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays or abrasive liquids that could strip historic paint layers. Apply a light clear paste wax periodically to protect the painted finish and keep glazed glass clean with specialised, non-ammonia glass cleaner applied to a cloth.
