Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Arts and Crafts wall-mounted cupboard originates from 1910. The wooden piece exhibits a warm brown colour with a dark textured stippled surface, complemented by hand-painted details in green, yellow, and red. The front door incorporates tendril-shaped cut-out handles at the sides and features elaborate pyrography decoration. An owl with outstretched wings sits at the top above a pair of entwined green serpents, leaves, and scrolling foliage. The structure measures 45 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 14.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this cabinet provides practical storage while adding distinct decorative character to a narrow wall space in a hallway, study, or living area. The door opens to reveal an interior fitted with two small drawers and a shelf, keeping small items neatly stored away. The distinctive carved and painted motifs integrate well with rustic, Victorian, or Gothic interior schemes.

FAQs

Pokerwork, also known as pyrography, is the technique of decorating wood by applying heated metal tools to burn intricate designs into the surface. During the Arts and Crafts movement, artisans favoured this technique to create handcrafted, folklore-inspired patterns on wooden furniture and wall panels.

These pieces were typically crafted from close-grained hardwoods such as oak, birch, or beech to ensure a smooth canvas for burning. Stains, lacquers, and coloured pigments were often applied following the burning process to accentuate the scorched detailing.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-burnt detailing with subtle variations in depth and line thickness rather than machine uniformity. They also display period-appropriate joinery, natural age-related patination on untinted timber, and motifs characteristic of late nineteenth or early twentieth-century design.

Position the cupboard on a neutral wall in an entryway, hallway, or study to serve as a focal visual element. Combining dark timber and burned surface decoration with minimal contemporary furnishings highlights the detailed craftsmanship without cluttering the space.

Display the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to protect painted pigments and avoid wood movement. Dust regularly with a clean, dry cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood without damaging the burned texture.
