Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This impressive Victorian breakfront library bookcase dates from 1880 and comes in a rich dark brown mahogany with visible flame mahogany panels on the lower cupboard doors. Elaborate carved details include scrolled architectural arched pediments with decorative crests, detailed floral carvings along the upper stiles, and Greek key mouldings running horizontally across the base section. The upper section contains large glazed doors with numerous rectangular glass panes, while the lower section features solid timber doors with oval frames and brass drop handles, all resting on carved bracket feet. One lower door bears the stamped maker mark for Gillows. Measuring 265 cm high, 333 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, this large piece requires significant wall space. It serves as a commanding storage and display unit for books, rare collections, or fine decorative objects in a spacious study, home library, or formal living room.

FAQs

A breakfront library bookcase features a central section that projects forward from the flanking wing sections. Popularised in 18th and 19th-century Britain, these substantial pieces were designed for grand private libraries to store and display extensive book collections behind protective glass doors.

Cabinetmakers predominantly used solid mahogany or walnut frameworks paired with flame mahogany veneers for cabinet doors. Construction features include hand-cut dovetail joints, individual glazed glass panes held by timber glazing bars, and cast brass fittings.

Authentic period pieces often feature stamped maker marks on drawer edges or door tops, finely executed hand carvings, and high-grade mahogany with rich figure. Look for hand-planed backboards, original brass locks, and precise joinery techniques characteristic of the era.

A large mahogany bookcase serves as an architectural anchor in a living room, formal study, or dining room. Modern styling involves blending traditional leather-bound volumes with modern ceramics, sculptures, and curated art pieces inside the glazed sections.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually along the grain. Clean the glass with a mild, alcohol-free glass cleaner sprayed directly onto a microfibre cloth rather than the glass to protect the wood surrounding the panes.
