Description

A fine late Victorian cut glass pineapple/ham stand of smaller proportions. In Georgian and Victorian times, pineapples were hugely expensive and and to have one was a conspicuous sign of wealth. Families would sometimes have a pineapple stand in cut glass or porcelain on a side table or as a dining table centerpiece. Upturned they would also double as a ham stand and a large joint, surrounded by fruit and decoration would provide the focal point of a gathering or feast. This handsome and desirable Victorian example has a waisted centre, with extensive diamond cutting and panels of star cut shields. An unusual piece with a practical use. Dimensions below.

Victorian cut glass emerged during the 19th century, driven by advancements in manufacturing technology and a growing middle-class demand for decorative tableware. Artisans used intricate diamond, fan, and star cutting patterns to create pieces that maximised the refraction of light under gas or candle lighting.

Authentic period pieces were typically crafted from lead crystal, which allowed for deeper cuts and a higher refractive index than standard soda-lime glass. Skilled craftsmen utilised iron and stone wheels to manually grind and polish complex geometric patterns into the surface.

Authenticity is indicated by weight, hand-polished facets with slight irregularities, and a resonant ring when gently struck. Older pieces often exhibit minor surface wear on the base from use, alongside a soft greyish-blue hue in the glass composition.

These reflective pieces serve as striking focal points on sideboards, dining tables, or open shelving, adding texture and historic contrast to contemporary minimalist spaces. They can be displayed on their own as sculptural objects or utilised functionally for holding fruit and florals.

Wash antique glass by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, lining the sink with a towel to prevent chipping. Avoid using harsh chemicals, abrasive sponges, or dishwashers, and dry immediately with a lint-free cloth to maintain clarity.
