A rummer is a traditional type of large, heavy drinking glass that became popular in Britain during the late 18th and 19th centuries, primarily used for serving ales, wines, and punch.

Authentic period rummers were typically crafted from lead glass or lime glass, hand-blown into moulds or free-blown with applied feet and stems, often featuring characteristic pontil marks on the base.

Authenticity is determined by examining the weight, surface wear patterns, slight asymmetries typical of hand-crafting, and the presence of a rough or polished pontil scar on the underside of the base.

These versatile vessels can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets as part of a historic collection, or utilised practically on a dining table or sideboard for serving beverages or desserts.

Antique glassware should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and abrasive sponges to protect the delicate surface and historic patina.
