An antique Victorian bedside cabinet made in England around 1860 from mahogany in a warm brown colour. The piece takes a rectangular form with a raised gallery surrounding the top edge, a single fielded panel door fitted with a round turned wooden knob, and a solid plinth base at the foot. Small age-related bumps and surface marks remain beneath the polished finish, bearing witness to its history. Measuring 81 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 33 cm deep, the cabinet functions well in a bedroom next to a bed to hold a bedside lamp, a book, and night-time essentials. The enclosed cupboard keeps personal items tidy, while the gallery top prevents objects from sliding off the edges. The traditional design fits easily into a country house interior or a period home.

Originating in the nineteenth century, these pieces were designed primarily as pot cupboards or nightstands to provide bedside storage within Victorian domestic bedrooms.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilised solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers over pine, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, fielded panel doors, turned wooden knobs, and heavy plinth bases.

Authentic pieces display hand-planed interior surfaces, natural wood patination, hand-cut joinery, turned wooden or cast brass fittings, and minor timber shrinkage consistent with nineteenth-century age.

These compact pedestal cabinets can function as traditional nightstands in modern bedrooms, as occasional side tables beside a sofa, or as storage cupboards in narrow entryways.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a clean microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, ensuring the unit is kept away from direct heat sources.
