Silver christening mugs have been presented as traditional gifts for newborns and infants since the 17th century, originating as a practical and enduring token of wealth, good fortune, and affection from godparents.

Edwardian mugs are typically crafted from sterling silver, possessing a purity of 925 parts per thousand, and are often created using a combination of hand-raising, spinning, and detailed repousse or chased ornamentation.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmark stamps, which include a standard mark for sterling silver, a city assay office mark, a date letter indicating the year of assay, and a makers mark.

An antique silver mug can be styled effectively as a decorative desk accessory for holding pens, or utilized as a small vase for seasonal florals on a mantelpiece or bookshelf.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialized, non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfiber cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the desirable natural patina.
