FAQs

Nineteenth-century pine cupboards and armoires were primarily crafted for domestic storage in rural farmhouses and country homes, where fitted closets were uncommon. They served as essential furniture pieces for storing household textiles, blankets, and garments.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid yellow or white pine, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, pegged frames, and panelled doors. Cabinetmakers utilised traditional iron or brass hardware alongside wooden turning knobs.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetailing, tool marks from hand planes, and natural timber shrinkage over time. Old-growth pine often displays distinct grain patterns, patination, and oxidisation around iron or brass fittings.

An antique pine armoire acts as a grounding focal point in modern bedrooms or living spaces, providing textural warmth against neutral walls. It can be balanced with minimalist decor or integrated into rustic farmhouse and eclectic schemes to create depth.

Maintain antique pine by dusting with a dry, soft cloth and treating the wood periodically with natural beeswax to nourish the finish. Keep the cupboard away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature fluctuations to prevent timber warping or cracking.
