FAQs

Decanter labels, originally known as bottle tickets, emerged in the 1730s in Britain to identify spirits and wines kept in unlabelled glass decanters. They hung around the bottle neck by a chain and indicated contents such as Rum, Port, or Madeira.

The majority of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century decanter labels were crafted from sterling silver, Sheffield plate, enamel, or electroplated nickel silver. Master silversmiths shaped, engraved, or die-stamped these items with specific spirit names.

Authentic Georgian silver labels typically bear British hallmarks, including the sovereigns head duty mark, makers mark, date letter, and lion passant. Examine the engraving style, chain attachment loops, and natural age-related oxidation for verification.

Display decanter labels draped over glass decanters on a bar cart, sideboard, or tray to enhance a drinks station. They can also be displayed mounted inside a frame as collectible wall art.

Clean gently with a soft silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish without stripping the dark oxidation inside the engraved letters. Avoid abrasive pastes or harsh dipping chemicals that can damage thin silver sheet metal or delicate link chains.
