This Georgian decanter label originates from 18th Century Scotland, formed from silver with a polished metallic grey finish. The elongated banner-shaped plaque carries pricked capital letters spelling the word Port across the front, complemented by two small suspension loops at the top edge. A fine belcher chain made of small circular link loops connects to the label, providing a flexible hanging mechanism. The body measures 5 cm wide and 2.2 cm high. In a contemporary interior, this collectible item sits on a sideboard top or home bar setup to label a decanter of fortified wine during dinner parties or gatherings. The secure link chain allows the tag to hang around the neck of a glass decanter bottle, serving as a functional accessory while displaying Georgian silver craftsmanship.

Decanter labels, historically known as wine tickets, emerged in the 18th century as clear glass decanters replaced opaque bottles, allowing hosts to identify stored spirits, wines, and fortified wines.

18th-century decanter labels were primarily crafted from sterling silver, Sheffield plate, or mother-of-pearl, featuring hand-engraved lettering and fitted with delicate chain suspensions.

Period-authentic pieces feature hallmark stampings, hand-engraved typography with characteristic depth variation, and original soldered chain loops consistent with historical metalworking techniques.

Drape the label over a glass carafes or crystal decanter displayed on a sideboard, drinks trolley, or home bar tray to introduce historical craftsmanship to contemporary entertaining spaces.

Clean gently with a soft microfibre cloth and specialized non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh liquid dips that strip natural oxidisation from the engraved lettering.
