Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Decanter labels, historically referred to as bottle tickets, originated in eighteenth-century Britain to identify the contents of opaque glass bottles and decanters. Typically crafted from sterling silver, these labels emerged during the Georgian era as dining traditions evolved to include clear glass vessels and varied fortified wines.

Georgian decanter labels were usually hand-stamped or cast from sterling silver, featuring engraved lettering for specific liquors such as Port, Sherry, or Madeira. They feature fine reeded or gadrooned borders and are fitted with delicate suspension chains designed to drape around the neck of a decanter.

Authentic Georgian examples feature British hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling quality, a makers mark, and a date letter, often stamped on the reverse side or border. The engraving displays period-appropriate typography, and subtle wear around the chain attachment loops indicates genuine age.

These historical silver accessories can be draped over contemporary crystal decanters on a drinks trolley or sideboard to add heritage character. Alternatively, they can be framed in shadow boxes or displayed as part of a curated barware collection.

Clean silver labels gently using a soft, lint-free cloth and a specialised silver polish formulated to avoid stripping the natural patination in lower recesses. Avoid immersing the delicate chains in harsh chemical dips, and store them in tarnish-resistant cloth bags when not on display.
