This Victorian burr walnut pier cabinet, dating from circa 1880, displays a warm brown timber finish with intricate marquetry inlaid decoration and delicate crossbanding along the frieze. The rectangular top is canted and sits above a pair of glazed panel doors fitted with a central brass tassel-hung drop pendant handle. Gilt-metal mounts adorn the uprights, and the interior contains shelves lined with red fabric. The cabinet stands on a solid plinth base. Measuring 103 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 39 cm deep, the piece provides compact display storage suited to a living room, hallway, or study within a traditional interior.

Originally designed to sit on the narrow wall space between windowsknown as a pierthese low, glazed cabinets were popular in 19th-century British homes for displaying books, porcelain, and curated ornaments.

Victorian cabinetmakers frequently used figured timber veneers such as burr walnut, rosewood, or mahogany, often accented with decorative marquetry, crossbanded borders, glass doors, and gilt-metal or ormolu mounts.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original glass with minor surface variations, brass hardware exhibiting natural oxidisation, and hand-applied veneers laid over a solid timber core.

Position the cabinet in an alcove, hallway, or living area, using the flat top surface for table lamps or ceramic vases while arranging bound books or glassware behind the glazed doors.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent veneer movement or fading, and clean regularly with a dry cotton cloth followed by a light application of beeswax polish.
