A firing glass is a small, heavy-footed drinking vessel used in the 18th century, named for the loud sound, resembling a musket fire, produced when slammed onto a wooden table after a toast.

These glasses were traditionally handmade using early lead glass compositions, which provided a heavy base, high refractive index, and durability suited for ceremonial tavern use.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the pontil mark on the thick, heavily reinforced foot, the presence of seed bubbles or striations within the glass body, and the characteristic heavy weight relative to the size.

Antique glass vessels can be displayed on open shelving, integrated into a bar cart arrangement, or used as single-stem flower vases to introduce historical texture into contemporary spaces.

Antique glass should be hand washed in lukewarm water using mild detergent and dried immediately with a lint-free cloth, avoiding sudden temperature changes and ultrasonic cleaners.
