Victorian scent bottles are small, decorative containers crafted to hold liquid perfumes or smelling salts, typically featuring intricate metal caps, hinged lids, or screw tops made of silver or gold.

These items were predominantly made from moulded or blown glass, frequently incorporating uranium or vaseline glass for its distinctive fluorescent green hue, alongside hand-cut facets and hallmarked sterling silver mounts.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate hallmarks on the metal mounts, hand-cut glass facets with minor signs of age-related wear, and a bright green glow under ultraviolet light due to the uranium oxide content.

They can be displayed on mirrored trays, dressing table surfaces, or open shelving where natural light can pass through the transparent coloured glass to highlight its optical properties.

Preservation involves cleaning gently with lukewarm water and mild soap while avoiding harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, or abrasive materials that could damage the fragile glass or historical metalwork.
